Indian Village, Toronto became the eighteenth century in a fur trading center. The British Governor John Simcoe made Toronto the capital of Upper Canada and gave the name of York (1796).

When the war between America and Britain in 1812, the U.S. military took over Toronto, which later had to withdraw because of fires.

In 1834, York again changed its name to Toronto, of Indian origin. It became the capital of Ontario in 1867 and its growth was rapid.
